The Feathersmith Leather Fly Tying Mat - only £49.50
Here at Feathersmith, we are always looking to try something a little different, and this is no exception. It is our very first product we have designed and had made specifically for us - from a UK supplier (in Lichfield, Staffordshire).
Our NEW soft leather fly-tying mat (and table protector) measures 50cm (wide) x 30cm (deep) - which is more than enough room for your vice, tools and any bits and bobs.
It also has the added benefit of using 100% real soft leather - the grain within the leather means that those pesky beads will not roll off (never to be seen again) and with the various colours we've chosen it also allows you to pick out those fine threads and feathers easily.
Unless you're lucky enough to have your very own fly-tying room, like most of us you will have to make use of either the kitchen or dining room table - you will no doubt also have to be very careful not to scratch or otherwise mark said table - otherwise your partner will not be happy!
I have this very issue when I am tying flies at home, so I thought there must be a better (and more tactile) way forward than just using old newspapers - From this, our Leather Fly Tying Mat & Protector was born.
Full Specification:
Dimensions: 50cm (wide) x 30cm (deep)
Leather: Chrome Tanned 100% Real Leather (supple and full-grain - see below)
Fly-Pattern Inspired Colours:
- Orange Otter - a vivid orange soft leather - my favourite
- Purple Haze - think "The Purple One" from a box of Quality Street
- Grey Wulff - a light Grey soft leather
- Natural Tan Klinkhamer - a dark tan (almost antique) soft leather
- Black Gnat - jet black soft leather
- Brown Bug - a dark reddish brown soft leather
- Duck Egg Blue - exactly the colour the name suggests
- Frappe - a light brown/dark pink (almost skin-tone) colour
Chrome-tanning has become one of the most common techniques for producing leather. It has special characteristics:
- Soft and Supple: Chrome-tanned leather tends to be more flexible and softer than vegetable-tanned leather.
- Water Resistant: It is more resistant to water and heat than other tanning methods.
- Durability: The process creates highly durable leather, resistant to shrinkage, and can maintain its shape better over time.
- Colour Variety: Chrome-tanned leather takes dyes very well, so it is available in a wide variety of vibrant colours and finishes.
We have our NEW fly-tying mats & protectors available now in various 'fly-pattern inspired' colours - from my personal favourite Orange Otter to Black Gnat and most colours in-between.
I'm sure there will be a colour which will match your fly-tying mood perfectly.

Need Some Inspiration?
At its core, fly tying is an art form that marries creativity with functionality, transforming the tying vise into a canvas and feathers into brushstrokes.
