Feathersmith was born from the passion we have here at Feathersmith for fly fishing. We treat all of our flies as we would a piece of jewellery and look at each as a miniature work of art - it's all about quality materials and attention to detail.
All of our Feathersmith kits include access to a full step-by-step tying video, along with associated videos on how to get the best when fishing your finished fly.
For this next in our series of kits, we are focussing on a very special fly pattern - first devised in 1984 by Dutch angler Hans van Klinken - The Klinkhamer Special (also known as Nordischer Hammer or Klinki).
Originally called the LT Caddis (Light Tan) but was later officially named the Klinkhåmer Special. The fly was designed to imitate an emerging caddis/sedge fly, which trout and grayling hoover up from the surface film. This fly pattern is now universally acknowledged as the best and most adaptable emerger pattern ever designed. It is considered a standard for targeting trout and grayling and has been very effective for many fly anglers since its inception.
The Klinkhamer Special is suitable for:
Target Species: Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout & Grayling
Water Types: Rivers & Stillwaters
Location: All UK
Tying Difficulty: Intermediate (full easy-to-follow video step-by-step instructions are provided)
Our Klinkhamer Special kit contains:
- Hooks: AHREX FW525 hooks (10 each of sizes #10, #12 & #14)
- Thread: Semperfli Nano Silk (White)
- Dubbing: Peacock Dubbing Mix
- Dubbing: Superdry (Cream)
- Post: Z-Lon White
- Hackle: Brown (Sizes #10, #12 & #14)
- Rib: Uni-Mylar Pearl #16
- Pre-Tied Sample Klinkhamer Special
Contained inside each kit is a leaflet which will direct you to a secret page on our website where all the technique information and step-by-step tying videos can be accessed.
With the help of some professional fly tyers, we've identified some really beautiful and unique fly patterns, gathered together all of the materials from world-class and well-respected manufacturers (like Semperfli) and then created a kit which allows you to tie flies for a specific technique - 30 flies in total.
Here's what's included when you purchase one of our pattern-specific kits:
- A kit full of world-class materials - more than enough to tie all 30 flies in the kit
- Video tutorials of how to tie each variation of the fly - presented by a professional fly tyer
- Information on how to use and fish the finished fly
The other piece of advice you will always hear is "It's more expensive to tie your own flies than it is to buy them." - not anymore it isn't, our Feathersmith kits allow you to tie a stunning pattern with the very best materials available - all for less than £1 per fly - now that is great value.

Need Some Inspiration?
At its core, fly tying is an art form that marries creativity with functionality, transforming the tying vise into a canvas and feathers into brushstrokes.
